The Role of 3D Echocardiography in the Assessment of Valvular Heart Disease

of cardiac structures. Image resolution remains a concern for transthoracic 3D imaging, but the recent development of 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) (either real-time or reconstructed) has made this less of an issue. Development of 3D echocardiography has made vast contributions to the understanding of mitral valve function. Although in the majority of patients with mitral stenosis, comprehensive 2D and Doppler echocardiography is sufficient, several clinical trials have demonstrated that 3D echocardiographic mitral valve planimetry can provide better correlation with invasively determined mitral valve area. An example of this technique using 3D transthoracic imaging is shown in Figure 1. With the advent of real-time 3D TEE, rapidly obtainable views of the mitral valve, either from Current Trends in the Practice of Medicine Vol. 26, No. 5, 2010

DOPPLER ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY IN SUBCLINICAL RHEUMATIC VALVULAR REGURGITATION: ALONGTERM STUDY
Doppler echocardiography (DE) is known to be a valuable tool for detecting subclinical forms of valvular regurgitation (VRJ in theacutephase of rheumatic fever (RF). Previous studies have mostly dealt with the acute phase problem with only short-term follow-up. In this study, 24 children between 4-15 years of age (mean age II.X±2.7 years) with RF without clinically diagnosed carditis (most ...
متن کاملEvaluation of transesophageal echocardiography in detecting cardiac sources of emboli in ischemic stroke patients
Background: Embolus is one of the causes of ischemic stroke that can be due to cardiac sources such as valvular heart diseases and atrial fibrillation and atheroma of the aorta. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is superior in identifying potential cardiac sources of emboli. Due to insufficient data on TEE findings in ischemic stroke in Iran, the present study was done to evaluate TEE in...
متن کاملThe modern role of transoesophageal echocardiography in the assessment of valvular pathologies
Despite significant advancements in the field of cardiovascular imaging, transoesophageal echocardiography remains the key imaging modality in the management of valvular pathologies. This paper provides echocardiographers with an overview of the modern role of TOE in the diagnosis and management of valvular disease. We describe how the introduction of 3D techniques has changed detection and gra...
متن کاملPre-operative transthoracic real-time three-dimensional echocardiography for a better surgical strategy.
UNLABELLED In this study we aimed to evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in the assessment of cardiac valve morphology. METHODS Bidimensional (2D) and real-time 3D TTE was performed in 104 patients consecutive with cardiac catheterisation, prior to valve surgery. Using surgical findings as the gold standard, 2D and 3D TTE were compared for adequate recogni...
متن کاملEffect of face-to-face training and pamphlets in reducing anxiety in 7-25 years old clients referred to echocardiography
Introduction: Echocardiography is a diagnostic test in that ultrasound waves are used for producing images of the heart muscle and valves. Echocardiography provides a series of useful information about the heart and its function for treatment purpose. It is especially useful for assessing valvular heart disease. Although it has no known side effect, but similar to any other medical procedure, i...

A total of 14 cases of infective endocarditis (IE) in children aged 6 months to 10 years were seen from December 1987 to December 1992 at the pediatric unit of Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Center. The majority of patients (12 of 14) were between 5 and 10 years of age. Acyanotic congenital heart disease was known to preexist in 78.6% and rheumatic valvular heart disease in 21.4% of cases. Or...
